How much data does Zoom Use – A Complete Guide

Read the Tamil version of this post here

Whether we like it or not, zoom meetings and conferences have become part of our routine. Especially since after the emergence of Covid19

From educational providers to businesses have heavily adopted zoom conference applications for day-to-day collaboration and communication while staying and working from home.

So, it is essential for you to know how much data does zoom use for conferencing, how can you optimize your use of zoom for seamless communication.

In this post, you will learn how much data does zoom use and how can you save data by understanding how data is consumed when you are connected in zoom meeting.

How much data does zoom use for a meeting?

Note: Here it is important for you to understand the difference between bandwidth and throughput with respect to the use of the internet.

Here, when we talk about data transfer, bandwidth is the maximum rate at which data can be transferred through your internet connection.

For instance, if your internet service provider (ISP) tells you that your download speed is 2Mbps, it means it’s the maximum possible data transfer rate you will get if there are no interruptions. However, in reality, you do not get the internet connection speed as promised due to factors such as latency, jitter, error rate, and so on.

Therefore, let us assume that the actual speed you receive is 1.5 Mbps which is referred to as the throughput. So, it is important to understand that what actually matters is the throughput speed.

Bandwidth vs Throughput

Now, let’s see what are the zoom’s recommended bandwidth requirements for different use cases

Bandwidth requirement for Zoom usage

Please note that the bandwidth here refers to the throughput.

For one to one video calling:

  • 600kbps (up/down) for high quality video
  • 1.2 Mbps (up/down) for 720p HD video
  • Receiving 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)
  • Sending 1080p HD video requires 1.8 Mbps (up/down)

For group video calling:

  • 800kbps/1.0Mbps (up/down) for high quality video
  • For gallery view and/or 720p HD video: 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps (up/down)
  • Receiving 1080p HD video requires 2.5mbps (up/down)
  • Sending 1080p HD video requires 3.0 Mbps (up/down)

For screen sharing only (no video thumbnail): 50–75kbps

  • For screen sharing with video thumbnail: 50–150kbps
  • For audio VoiP: 60–80kbps

What mentioned above are technical details.

Let’s move on to discuss how much data does zoom use in common terms.

Before moving,

Conferencing applications like zoom make dual-mode of communication simultaneously. It means when you use zoom you are downloading and uploading data together.

Unlike Youtube where when you watch videos on youtube, you are making download to view the videos.

However, when you use conferencing applications like zoom, the process of downloading takes place when you see video and listen audio from others while when you are sharing your video and audio, your data is shared to others which is the process of uploading. Therefore, here the data use in zoom like applications should be calculated as follows

Total Data Use = Dowloading + Uploading

How much data does zoom consume when you use it

1:1 Video Calling

High270 MB/hr.270 MB/hr.540 MB/hr.
720p540 MB/hr.540 MB/hr.1.08 GB/hr.
1080p810 MB/hr.810 MB/hr.1.62 GB/hr.
  • It’s between 9 MB  to 27 MB per minute

Group Video Calling

High450 MB/hr.360 MB/hr.810 MB/hr.
720p675 MB/hr.675 MB/hr.1.35 GB/hr.
1080p1.2 GB/hr.1.2 GB/hr.2.4 GB/hr.
  • Which is 13.5 MB  to 40 MB per minute.

  • Use optimizes to provide us a better experience based on the device that we use to connect to a zoom meeting.

However during this pandemic, students and education providers heavily rely on zoom like applications for learning purpose. Therefore, we would like to provide following suggestions to reduce the data use. Please make sure your participants or education providers have thorough understanding about these important information. Because, a person’s ignorance may lead to high data use for others.

How to reduce the data use in Zoom?

1) Turn on video and audio only when they are necessary

Most of the learning activities in zoom seems to be one-way communication.

i.e: Teacher teaches via online whereas students are listening and seeing it.

So, in this situation, everyone can keep their video and audio turned off except the teacher. In case of asking any question or answering a question, the particular student can turn on the audio and video as required.

Moreover, when you schedule a meeting you make sure to keep the settings as below. If you do so, it will ensure that upon participants joining the meeting, their video and audio will be turned off automatically.

And also, when you adjust your video setting as below by unticking HD you can reduce a considerable amount of data when you use zoom for communication

2) Start and finish zoom meeting ontime

Please understand that every second that you and your participants are connected to zoom, data is consumed for you all. Therefore, make sure to start on time and finish on time. It’s not a good practise to keep waiting those who join the meeting on time.

Start the meeting on time. So that late joiners will try to join on time next time.

3) Try to reduce data use from Uploading as much as possible

When we turn off our video and audio where it’s not necessary, we can maximum reduce the data use which would occur via uploading.

4) When the meeting is paused or given any break, make sure all of the participants mute and turn of their video.

So, if these best practices are followed, roughly it would consume 250MB to 350 MB per hour. However, the data use may be less or more depending on the features you use in zoom.

Therefore, responsible zoom use will reduce data use for us all.

Note: All suggestions are stille application to all conferencing applications like zoom, MS Teams, Zoho Meeting and so forth.
