What is hybrid cloud computing?
If you have ever surfed the internet, you have probably come across articles that are all about what is hybrid cloud computing. But what is it really? Is it another name for what we commonly call virtualization, cloud computing, or a mix of the two? These are questions many individuals have asked. And I believe it is important to understand what hybrid cloud computing is before delving into its definition.
A hybrid cloud is one which uses both on-demand and off-demand services from the same cloud provider. Virtual private servers (VPS) and cloud services like IaaS, SaaS (Software as a Service), and Platform as a Service (PaaS) provide the tools for on-demand and off-demand functionality. In other words, this means that the user is able to utilize the full power and capacity of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) via their own dedicated infrastructure. A hybrid cloud typically has two to three different private clouds in place.
The beauty of this concept is that users will only pay for what they use. This makes for cost savings in the long run because there is no need to purchase additional hardware or hire IT staff to manage the hybrid cloud environment. In fact, there is no management platform required because the infrastructure is provided by the AWS marketplace. What is more, the infrastructure is capable of adapting to any future changes that may be implemented by AWS.
So what is hybrid cloud computing then? It is a concept that outlines two distinct methods of delivering applications in the on-demand or ‘private’ cloud. With the on-demand mode, the user simply logs onto the AWS platform and begins using whatever applications are currently available. With the off-demand mode, the user will use a virtual private server in order to maintain and resources in the cloud.
There are two primary hybrid cloud solutions that make up this dual method of delivery. The first is the Private cloud model, also known as a private cloud. In this case an individual or business has the ability to rent out a portion of AWS’s resources while still using their own internal servers. This is a great way to utilize the capabilities of AWS without having to purchase and manage a dedicated infrastructure. While this model does not provide the same management or support as an AWS subscription, it can be highly effective when used in conjunction with the second method, which is the Public cloud model.
This is what is hybrid cloud computing is in essence: two distinct methods that can be used to deliver applications to the consumer. If one looks back at the evolution of the web, one would realize that the evolution came about because someone needed a way to deliver dynamic content to users across the globe. Enter the world of web services, which was quickly followed by the Cloud.
The Cloud was especially useful because it provided a way for internet businesses to eliminate many of the expenses associated with having an on-site physical space. By eliminating the cost of hardware, software, and personnel it was possible to focus the necessary financial resources on other aspects of the business while its technical infrastructure was taken care of by an external provider.
The evolution of hybrid cloud computing is happening today as more internet users and businesses move away from on-premise software and towards an online subscription model. When an internet user requests an application, it might be sent over the network via a series of different networks until it reaches the customer’s desktop. From there, the user can access the program through any browser, platform, or device, as long as they have an internet connection.
Through hybrid cloud computing, developers and IT administrators can eliminate many of the operational expenses associated with managing an in-house data center. One of the biggest benefits to this type of architecture is the elimination of licensing costs. Hybrid software and infrastructure typically work out to be less expensive than traditional on-premise software solutions. Since it uses open-source technology and applications, it may also be easier to implement, cheaper, and easier to update.
